We then travelled a few miles up the road to  Holehird Gardens, the home of The Lakeland Horticultural Society.  It is run entirely by volunteers and is home to four national collections: astilbe, daboecia, meconopsis and polystichum.

The gardens are divided into three main areas: The Walled Garden, The Upper Garden and The Lower Garden.

Members were free to explore the gardens on their own and everyone agreed they were spectacular, especially the walled garden and the views across to Lake Windermere.

Our annual Garden Visit 2019

Brockhole on Windermere & Holehird Gardens

The sun shone and we boarded our coach and set off for the Lake District.

Our first stop was Brockhole on Windermere where members enjoyed a few hours exploring this interesting place.

There were lots of activities on offer at Brockhole - Kayaks and Canoes, Archery, Treetop zip wires and treks - but our interest was, of course, the gardens and some of our members enjoyed a guided tour with the Head Gardner, Ian. There were magnificent trees, beautiful borders and the kitchen garden - a work in progress!

Thank you, Sandra, for organising such a lovely day out!
