10th November - The People’s Cinema - a history of the Co-operative Movement - presented by Gillian Lonergan

This delightful lecture commenced with a slide show of pictures illustrating the early days of the Co-operative movement including the heritage of the Rochdale Pioneers.  It was explained how the Co-operative movement progressed and how shoppers could accrue dividends when they shopped and get cinema tickets to films specially made by the Co-operative Society and shown in the cinemas in their larger stores. The films promoted the products and the organisation and were often comedies.  We were fortunate to be able to see a few of these films at the lecture.  A most entertaining and informative talk.
