10th March 2014 “Manchester Road to the Matterhorn” - lecture by Tony Mitchell

Our Society Chairman, Tony Mitchell, entertained members with an illustrated account of his and his wife, Jean’s journey, completely by rail, from Manchester Road Station in Burnley to Switzerland via Preston, London, The Channel Tunnel, Paris and Basel.

They travelled on Swiss Railways, visiting St Moritz and taking The Glacier Express to Zermatt where they walked in the Matterhorn area before continuing to the Yungfrau Range, known as ‘The Roof of Europe’ - 11,500 feet above sea level!  Finally, they spent a few days in Lucerne, Switzerland, before returning to Burnley.
